I had a chance to do a web project recently for GMK Associates Inc. in Columbia, South Carolina. I built them a website using a combination of Adobe Flash and WordPress. Using Adobe Flash allows them to feature animated 3D architectural renderings and using WordPress allows them to easily control the content of their website. They had an amazing collection of high quality images from various construction projects around the southeast. Many of those projects are familiar landmarks to me like the Koger Center for the Arts. I really liked working with the animated 3D architectural renderings and I’m featuring them prominently on their homepage. I also had a chance to do some of my own 3D animations for the website.
The process was educational for me dealing with a larger firm with a robust amount of content. The majority of clients I’ve had up until this time have been relatively small. It’s the first time I’ve sat in a board room overlooking the state capital building trying to explain to a group of folks how the internet works. I was honest in explaining to them that even if they had hired a large advertising agency and spent five times the amount of money, they would still just have a fella like me building the site so why not skip the middlemen. As Far as Clients Go
Many of them are great, but some are a pain in the ass. My advice is as soon as you realize that one is going to be a hassle… drop em (politely) and move on because it won’t work out and there are plenty more out there. Sometimes you’re just not suited with a client. Go ahead and draw the ‘line in the sand’ so to speak. I have only run into a couple who were really out of line, because some people you just can’t make happy, no matter how much effort you put into it. I spend as much time educating clients on what it is I do and other technical questions as I do building the site sometimes. Be informed and be professional. I’ve found that happy clients were generally happy and successful before you got involved. If a client looks to be stressed… they’re going to pass that right along to you.

Glenn Gould
Aside from his passion and technical prowess, I’m not exactly sure what it is about Glen Gould that attracts me to his work. Perhaps it’s the fact that so many others believe his work exemplifies genius. I think this quote best exemplifies our shared belief on art.
“The justification of art is the internal combustion it ignites in the hearts of men and not its shallow, externalized, public manifestations. The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline but is, rather, the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.”1
Regardless, I think I’ve listened to every single Glen Gould recording available. I’m currently listening to him perform Piano Sonatas 16-18, Op. 31 recorded in 1973. Aside from my brother, I know only one other fella who shares this sort of passion for Glen Gould. The artist Brian Rutenberg has been studying him for years and makes note of this on his website at http://www.brianrutenbergart.com/gg.html.
