  • Java, Darwin, UNIX and Osirix

    Update: 3/11/2018 – This article was a rambling mess when I ran across it today. It even included a bunch of hot-linked images. I used to just make notes to myself on this site and evidently, I was fascinated by the history of Unix and Java, intrigued by Osirix, and had recently installed Darwin. I think I was finally getting to the underpinnings of the operating systems. I’ve just cut down everything to the essential links since half of the other one’s are obsolete anyway. I like to leave the old posts up to remind myself that “you don’t know what you don’t know”.

  • Microsoft Silverlight

    Here’s the new Microsoft Silverlight download. It’s still pretty lame… doesn’t support H264 or MPEG4… and they keep mentioning (at least ten times in the factsheet) their Emmy award winning .wmv format. yeah? Well… here’s the pudding. Oh.. and one more thing while I’m software bashing .. the expression suite media is just Iview that microsoft gobbled up last year Iview media.

  • Microsoft Silverlight vs Adobe Media Player

    Today at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters conference (NAB2007), Microsoft and Adobe have gone tit for tat with product launches that directly target one another.

    I’ve come to the same conclusion as this chap …Adobe is getting into the Desktop Media Player business, which means they are competing with Microsoft’s Windows Media Player directly. It is also a major opportunity for Adobe to feed the Apollo ecosystem and show people the limitations of traditional desktop software.

  • Harvey Mudd

    I’ve decide, when it comes to computing, that if they don’t lead back to UC Berkley than Harvey Mudd likely something to do with it. My brother and I were exchanging emails this morning trying to figure out the who’s who of software development and the internet. It really just comes down to math and logic and Harvey Mudd has a distinguished program that has produced a number of important contributors to computing.

    CHALLENGE
    Sell airtime on SABC channels in the lead up to the Cricket World Cup.

    SOLUTION
    Show media planners the shocking media options they’ll get stuck with if they don’t book with the SABC. To illustrate this we drove them to a non-existent Caribbean media company’s website to explore the dodgiest media solutions ever, reinforcing the need to book with the national broadcaster before they run out of options.

    RESULTS
    • exceeded sales target by 267%
    • 39% more hits than targeted on launch day
    • an average of 1412 hits per month

  • Google Real Estate

    so it’s on.. Google is building a 600 million dollar facility about 30 miles from my house and The Post and Courier is reporting the annual payroll to be between 12 and 15 million. It certainly makes me want to know more about maintaining a huge building of servers.

    And in more than one way… Google announced they’re getting in on the real estate listing business – Homes not just homepages. I’ve been using Google Base to post real estate listings with videos and virtual tours to Google.

    Side notes: of local interest… this guy has an insightful local blog and these guys are good Butterfat (sweet name) and look like a very talented bunch. I noticed a skateboarder standing with two of the town’s finest in blue.. and I figured it’s got to do with whole skater stink at waterfront park.. I say if ole Joe wants to outlaw skaters, he’ll get the same reaction he did to motorbikers on Harleys.. they’ll all roll into town and start provoking the police with video cameras and what not. If they don’t tear up waterfront park, the city might give em some slack.

  • Beach Music

    This video was a co-production of ETV and the SC Department of Parks Recreation and Tourism.
    Rick Sebak was the producer, writer, and narrator of “Shag.”
    Buck Brinson was the director of photography, and Elaine Cooper was the editor.

    I caught that episode on Beach Music last night on SC ETV. My dad is into really into beach music and I grew up immersed in the culture of it. I could write quite a bit about it here, but I’ll save that for another time.
